I visited London last spring and sat next to a stranger on the Tube who was reading a book that looked interesting. I wasn't able to see the title of the book, but I was able to write down what I think is a chapter title as well as a heading from the page he was on (though I don't remember which is which). Does anyone know the title and/or author of this book? It looked really interesting and I regret not asking for its title when I was sitting next to the person reading it.

Thanks!

This is an incredibly vague description

but there is this book that I saw once that is about what to do if your boyfriend is a zombie?
Maybe it was a vampire, but I would have been far less interested in it if it was a vampire book. I saw it in B&N a couple months ago with the new teen releases but then when I went back like a week later I couldn't find it and had no clue what the name of the book was.

So this has been bugging me forever and I'm really hoping somebody's heard of this.

It's been at least ten years since I read this, so I'm a bit fuzzy, BUT. I'm looking for a pre-teen/YA book about a girl who gets kidnapped. I remember there being a lot about "magical familiars" you know, animal companions. All I remember is that there's a boy who follows her home in his car from school or something and knows all about her, and kidnaps her. I'm pretty sure she ends up in a house in the middle of the woods and has to try and escape. There's an element of magic to it, and there may have been something to do with a horse but it's also likely I'm imagining that part.

That is terribly vague but I can't remember a lot, sorry! Hopefully somebody can make any sense out of that.

Play set in 1950s/60s England about disturbed girl who becomes introverted and talks to a doll

I read this play in the mid-nineties and I believe it was set in 1950s/60s England. All I can remember is that it centred on a teenage (I think) girl
who had been assaulted by her parents' lodger and had consequently become disturbed and introverted. She only talks to a doll, which I think was a clown. I can't remember whether her issues were resolved by the end of the play.

Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye has been suggested to me, but unfortunately it's not the one I'm after.

Thanks

Tinga de Pollo

As I said on Wednesday, Kramer and I have really been missing Mexican food, so we decided to make our own at home. I shared the corn tortillas that I made with you then, and now I present the best chicken tacos that I have ever made. These tacos were nice and spicy while still being a bit sweet, and the chicken was tender and moist. I had always shied away from making tacos with chipotle chilies in adobo sace because I thought it was just another unnecessary ingredient. Wrong! These chilies were what was standing between me and the most perfect tacos.

Chipotle chilies are basically smoke-dried jalapeño chilies, and they're very popular in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. The chipotle chilies that I used in my recipe were canned in adobo sauce, which includes spices, tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, and often other types of chilies, which indeed my cans had. Adobo simply means "sauce" or "marinade", and this sauce should always be included in whatever you're cooking when using the canned chipotle chilies because it's absolutely delicious. These canned chilies go well with chicken, pork, beef, and seafood, as well as vegetables. Tinga de pollo itself means "stewed chicken", and is typically used to top tostadas or sopes (soups), but I had tacos in mind for my tinga de pollo. It is typically made by stewing shredded or chopped chicken, pork, or beef in a sauce of tomatoes, chilies, and other spices, as I did in this recipe. The result is a delicious dish that is spicy, smokey, and sweet, with the wonderful textures of shredded chicken, chopped tomatoes, and sauteed onions. If you don't have any tacos on hand, don't worry! This is a great meal that can even be eaten alone. I added pico de gallo, which is an uncooked salsa of diced onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and lime juice. It's a perfect contrast to the spicy chicken, as it's cool and refreshing. If you want to try an authentic Mexican dish, this is it! Recipe after the cut or on my blog at The Crepes of Wrath.

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge 06 - Notes of Doom

Yay! More YamaNade! ^_^

Sorry this took us so long, but as I explained in the last post here we felt the Ando Natsu crowd deserved a little attention. ^_^ But don't worry! We're already hard at work on the next episode! We've both been a little drained from work, but this series is great stress relief. :D

But enough babbling. Let's get on with the good stuff! Without further ado...

Still Finding My Footing Somehow

Last week went to a Girlyman Concert with Sho and Xave on Wednesday and saw Muse live with DJ and Ginneh on Saturday, both concerts awesome in their own way. Muse puts on a spectacular show, they really know how to use a big-venue effects budget.

I've started to get really much more into Evoke than I expected to.

Going to Intercon this weekend.

Fashion work continues apace: I have a better jacket. I have some jeans that might fit, maybe, if I get them hemmed. (No one sells jeans for short people.) If that fits, I need to buy more jeans. I need a better hat, and a less-formal belt, and new sneakers. Etc.

Today was the employee party at ITA. Was all right. Eighties themed. The party planning committee (how I'm referring to HR from now on) did a decent job, though I think that sort of party is more their scene than the rest of the company's. Hit the Ballmer Peak and returned to work.

I don't like it when I'm too tired to want to make the transition from not-bed to bed.

What was that book - one of those HQN/Silhouette type - famous doctor/surgeon. New young doctor/resi

So the story revolves around this popular doctor/surgeon. And a new batch of young doctors/residents who join the hospital

They have some sort of softball match (charity)? Her swing causes the ball to hit him - he gets a concussion. They take him to the hospital

He is a widower. Has a young daughter. The daughter has eating disorder - but the dad doesnt realize it - in fact gets offended when the young lady doc tries to tell him

Random fact: the girl has a dreamcatcher in her room (from her mom?)

Would appreciate any help - this was one of those harlequin/silhouette type books

Thanks

short Christian story about apples?

I thought of this yesterday, and wondered where I'd read it. I believe it was a little girl (pretty sure it was a girl anyway) who was staying with her grandparents(?) on a farm. I recall the girl and her grandmother storing apples in the attic(?). The grandmother tells the little girl to look over the apples carefully and not put any in the pile that were bad/bruised/had marks. The girl gets tired of looking over the apples and puts one bad apple in the pile. Later when the girl and grandmother go back to the attic the one bad apple had gone mouldy and the mould had spread to the other apples. The moral of the story being something about how one bad apple (person) can ruin/affect good apples (people).

I'm thinking it is a young persons Christian story, and read in the 80s - but don't quote me on that.

Does anyone know where this story/book might be found?

Conrad?

I recall having my teacher read a book aloud to the class called "Conrad" when I was in fourth grade, but according to Amazon and Google, no such book exists.

My memory of the story is fuzzy, but I believe that it started out with a dead-beat sort of woman (I think her name might've been "Debbie," but I'm not sure) finding a pink package on her doorstep. When she takes it inside, she reads a note in it that tells her to just add water to the box, and when she does, a full-grown boy assembles itself from whatever is inside the box. Now this woman's duty is to take care of this boy, who calls himself Conrad (or at least I remember him coming with the name to begin with; the woman didn't pick it), and generally bungles raising him by feeding him ice cream and wafers for dinner and trying to coax him to watch TV. I remember him getting very upset at her smoking habits, as well, and would burst into tears at very little provocation. I also remember him not getting on very well at school.

If it helps, I remember the hardcover being powder blue.

EDIT: Found. Conrad: The Factory -Made Boy by Christine Nostlinger.

PLEASE HELP ME FIND THIS BOOK

This is everything that i can remember about it:

its about a girl who is caught fooling around with her young lover in a barn
by her father. Her father loves horses and her mother died in a riding
accident when she was younger. the father whips the boy and sends him away
and tries to marry off his daughter to some guy name Steed i think. Her old
love flam eventually comes back and attempts to rape her in a barn when she
is saved by her husband steed who she realizes she loves...i also remember
that he old love flame used to give her little trinkets that she valued but
later looked back on and realized that they were cheap and fake...i think
her name MIGHT be Caroline or Cathrine or Catrina...but I'm not' sure...oh
and its a historical romance if that helps!

I read it 2 to 3 years ago, but i know it was definitely published in the 2000's

If you could find out what book this is or remember and remind me that would
be AMAZING!!!!

I didn't think I'd wind up posting here, but I remembered a short story and for the life of me I can't remember its name, author, or what book it was in.

The plot ran like this:

A man goes to a resort which has the express purpose of killing its patrons (a suicide vacation sort of thing). While he's there, he meets and falls in love with a woman, and tells the manager of the resort that he has changed his mind about dying. The manager accepts this and assures the man he can leave the next day and marry the woman, but that night they kill him anyway.

In the end, it comes out that the woman works for the resort and her job is to make people want to live right before the resort kills them.

Ideas? Thanks in advance!

Please help with the title and/or author of a suspense/horror novel.

I cannot remember the title or the author of this book.  I think the book was written between 1995-2003.  The book was about 2 girls that went on a school ski trip (I think it was a school ski trip) and one of the girls wanted to sneak out to  meet up with an older guy she had met (maybe online) at a local motel.  Both girls went together to meet the guy and there was another guy there with him.  Basically the guys were trying to get the girls to drink and have sex, but they mostly only wanted the one girl b/c the other girl was described as overweight and unattractive.  Somehow someone (I think the more attractive girl) ended up being killed and the rest of the book the remaining girl and two guys were trying to figure out what to do with the body.  I think the book was either a suspense/horror fiction novel or suspense/horror young adult.  If I remember correctly the front of the book either had ice or snow on the cover.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

LiveJournal Major Notes: March header, Charitable vgift, Squirrels in love

We're finishing up a few odds and ends before our next major release. Our mighty Ops guys continue to slay spambots and balance load times on a highwire without a safety net (which is kind of tough dressed in full ninja gear). Down on solid ground, we're celebrating this week's virtual birthday party with a warm toast to pants. If you can rearrange the letters of your favorite city, state, and/or country (feel free to combine these elements) to spell one of Frank's favorite treats (e.g., pants, wire, paper, etc.), he'll send you over a can of whipped cream to top it all off (provided you return the empty can for his midnight snack)! And, with that, let the word scrambling commence!

Stuff you should know:

  • We're still working on the delayed/missing notifications issue. Sorry, we're frustrated too. We'll keep you posted.
  • Last week, we became aware that a recently-implemented script was overwriting affiliate referral fees for some of our users. Once we confirmed this, our Ops team quickly removed the script. Please be aware that, while we may beta-test other affiliate scripts down the line, we will take greater measures to ensure that no existing user-referral arrangements are impacted in any way.
  • While we plan to stick to a weekly news schedule, if we have a release in between regular newsletters, we'll post here to keep you informed. You can also check [info]lj_releases for current release information.

To our paid users, we send squirrels in love!

If you have a paid or permanent account, you can send five free Squirrels in love vgifts through Monday, March 15th at 4pm, PST! You'll see both the free and the $0.99 squirrels displayed until they've scurried off to their new homes. Please send only one vgift at a time. In other words, you'll need to complete check-out and start a new order for each vgift you send. If you're not receiving vgifts (from friends and/or Frank), you may have disabled them. To enable vgifts, visit Edit profile (under Profile), scroll down to the bottom of the page, and select 'Do not disable' from the drop-down menu. Have fun!

Help is on the way!

We're pleased to announce the winner of our first charitable vgift poll, Doctors without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières, which provides critical medical care to under-served populations around the world. Priced at $2.99, we'll donate 100 percent of the proceeds we raise from the sale of this vgift (we'll cover credit card fees). We invite you to start recommending nonprofits for our next fundraising drive at [info]ljnewscontests. We'll take suggestions through the month and post a poll in the news during the first week of April to let you choose the recipient. We thank you, again, for your passion and generosity.

We've crowned a header

Congratulations to [info]ohterlus for submitting the winning header, which will go live next week and keep us leafy through mid-April! You can submit designs for our next header contest at [info]ljnewscontests now until March 31st. We'll post a poll in the news to let you decide which header will sit at the top of LiveJournal from mid-April to mid-May. All artistic interpretations are welcome. The winner will get a $25 LiveJournal gift certificate. All other contributors will receive $5 gift certificates. Our heartfelt appreciation for sharing your talent and creativity!

For this week's winning photo and more adventures with Frank & Meme, we'll catch you under the cut!

I read this book in 9th grade (I am now 22) but I can't remember the name. It follows this kid in a dystopian future where everyone is poor and resorts to murder, etc. to survive. The kid is searching for a place called "Eden" which is basically Heaven on Earth where only "perfect" people are allowed. Most of the inhabitants are products of gene splicing, etc. Does anybody remember the name of this book? It's not Brave New World. Thank you!
